Virginia native, Sallie Penn Turner, has been teaching and performing as a professional musician in the Richmond area for over 20 years. She teaches violin (all levels), beginning viola, and beginning and intermediate piano and organ. Sallie earned her Bachelor of Music Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University magna cum laude where she studied Violin Performance under Susanna Klein (violin, principal second Richmond Symphony).
In addition to the violin, Sallie Penn is also is proficient in both piano and pipe organ (her secondary instrument of study for undergrad) where she was trained by organist Dr. Ardyth Lohuis (Virginia Commonweatlth University, recording artist). She has participated in masterclasses with acclaimed artists such as Jennifer Koh (concert artist), David and Linda Cerone (Cleveland Institute of Music), Cyrus Forough, Uri Vardi, and Martin Davids (Callipygian Players-Chicago). Some of Sallie’s most influential teachers include Alana Carithers (Richmond Symphony), Herr Achim Gerber (Berlin Conservatory), and Susanna Klein.
Sallie has served as a music educator at many institutions in Richmond including Richmond Piano, Key Signatures, Chesterfield Music, Richmond Music Center, Bravo Music Academy, Collegiate School, St. Catherine's and St. Christopher's School, Eternity Music Academy, and the Hunter School she served as music director.
She currently teaches private lessons out of her personal studio. She performs as a freelance violinist, playing for weddings & orchestras central Virginia area. Sallie began her career teaching music in 2003, and has since been dedicated to bringing the joy of excellent music to her students. Sallie lives in Richmond, VA with her husband James and her four children Alice, Edward, and Charlie, and Tenny. While not teaching music or performing, Sallie Penn can be found swimming her heart out at the pool early in the morning. She loves anything having to do with the color pink, cows, beef, water, or sunshine!!
